English

In the present era, the media play an important role in the socialization of children. In the meanwhile, animations are of double importance due to their greater appeal to young children. This study aims to analyze the feminist aspects in Pixar’s recent animations, examining the content of two animations "Turning Red" (2022) and "Elemental" (2023). Using qualitative approach and qualitative content analysis method, the themes of the works were identified and interpreted. The theoretical framework of the research is based on “Socialization” and “Social Learning” theories from Bandura's view, as well as different branches of feminism -especially the third wave and postmodern feminism. Based on the findings, both of the studied animations have meaningful patterns of representing female identity; including: breaking taboos in the representation of menstruation, shifting traditional male and female roles, criticizing the stereotype of the "good girl", emphasizing women’s individual and economic independence, and depicting the relationship between men and women as two complementary elements. Also, the visual elements, narrative, and characterization of these works have served to promote feminist discourse; especially in the form of a subjective, autonomous, and multifaceted woman. According to the theories supporting the research, the aforementioned animations have played an important role in the process of gender socialization of children and adolescents through social learning, beyond the entertainment function. They can also redefine the audience's attitude towards gender and human relationships in accordance with feminist approaches, by creating new models. Therefore, a critical study of the content of animations in order to prevent from their negative impact, especially in the Islamic-Iranian culture context, is considered a strategic necessity in educational and media policy-making, and in addition, it will also be useful in the educational path of parents.
