This article examines synesthesia, a neurological condition where stimulation of one sensory pathway triggers involuntary responses in another, focusing on its auditory-visual subtype, chromesthesia, as a framework for analyzing experimental animation. Using Len Lye’s 1935 film A Colour Box as a case study, it explores correlations between visual components (color, form, and motion) and musical parameters (tempo, articulation, and dynamics). Employing a descriptive-analytical method, the study reviews theoretical foundations of synesthesia and its artistic applications before applying these concepts to the animation. The findings reveal that A Colour Box achieves strong audio-visual synchrony—such as the use of warm hues during fast tempos and cool tones during slower passages—yet also departs from expected correspondences; for instance, clustered circles appear where sharp musical notes might suggest angular forms. These deviations, however, are offset by compensatory visual techniques like density and repetition. The research ultimately proposes a structured framework for analyzing sound–image relationships in experimental animation, offering insights into how chromesthetic principles shape both design and perception. This model contributes to the study and practice of multisensory media, with potential applications in motion design, visual music, and synesthetic animation analysis.
