The present research is an attempt to present An ideal model for producing documentary films about water consumption. Over the past decades, the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) has produced many documentary films about the water crisis with the aim of culture building. Understanding how the crisis and the culture of water consumption are addressed in these documentaries is essential in order to identify their strengths and weaknesses. To achieve this goal, in-depth interview and qualitative content analysis, which are actually types of qualitative research methods in social sciences and communications, were applied, and by examining the opinions of media and environmental experts, desirable indicators of coverage and problems in the water sector were extracted. Finally, by comparing the extracted topics with the categories addressed in documentary films, we have presented a desirable content model. For this purpose, 13 experts were interviewed and 10 documentaries from two different time periods (the 1980s and 2010s) were reviewed. The results of this research suggested that a three-stage model must be followed in order to successfully address the water consumption crisis in documentary films, which is, correspondingly, as follows: Stage one: informing, preventive, and predictive; Stage two: educational and confrontational, engaging thoughts; and Stage three: mobilizing, revealing, speed, and urgency.
